Den 4 mars 1861 var "inauguration day" - en klar, mild och vacker dag i Washington som på den här tiden inte var något särskilt stor stad (cirka 65 000 invånare). Lincoln hade mer eller mindre smugglats in i staden via järnväg från Springfield i Illinois- attentatsrisken ansågs mycket hög. -
Strax efter klockan tolv på dagen anlände Lincoln med sin företrädare ,James Buchanan, till Capitolium- de gick genom en för tillfället byggd tunnel - konstruerad för att förhindra attentatsförsök och sedan upp på plattformen där Lincoln svor eden och höll sitt installationstal. Det var ett långt tal och jag återger bara de allra sista raderna:

" In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of the civil war. The Government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without being yourselves the aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the Government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it. I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic cords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Men... "the better angels of our nature" fick inte sista ordet. Snart avlossades de första skotten i ett oerhört blodigt krig. Lincolns hela presidenttid kom att ägnas åt inbördeskriget.

Idag anses Lincoln vara den främste av alla amerikanska presidenter någonsin.
