Minnen från Kap

Om William Charles Scully vet jag inte mycket men hans bok (biografi) "Unconventional Reminiscences" har jag hittat och den är utgiven ganska nyligen av Penguin Modern Classics. Scully (1855-1943) var född i Dublin och som barn utvandrade han tillsammans med sin familj till Kapkolonien och efter en lång resa med "Asia" anlände man till Table Bay någon gång under slutet av 1860-talet.

och hit- till Grahamstown ställdes kosan- här hyrdes det första hemmet i det nya landet. Ungefär så här måste det ha sett ut på den tiden även om fotot ovan är från 1898.

Grön "lourie"

"I imagine that at windless nightfall the rich, throbbing organ tones of the Indian Ocean surf fill all the darkling glades. I wonder do the green flame-winged louries today call hoarsely through the aisles of greenery, and the bushbucks bark their angry challenges from the deep and tangled hollows. I wonder do the monkeys, when the forenoon waxes sultry, swing chattering from bough to bough down the hillside, seeking their daily drink in the coolest depths of the kloof (ravin), and do the great Nymphalis butterflies, with wings of ochre and pearl, flit among the treetops!"
