Rosa Lewis (1867-1952) var en av sin tids största matlagningsexperter och förutom att hon ägde Cavendish Hotel på Jermyn Street i London sysslade hon också med att laga exklusiva middagar till hela överklassen - på slott och andra bättre platser.
Under sommaren 1911 var hon i full gång och hade precis lika mycket att göra som vanligt.
En av Rosas "tillbedjare" hade varit ingen mindre än Edward VII och när han gick ur tiden år 1910 var det ett hårt slag för Rosa. Den nye kungen var inte alls lika levnadsglad och uppskattade inte på samma vis mat och dryck. I Juliet Nicolsons bok " The Perfect Summer" kan man läsa om hur Rosa Lewis visade sin sorg över Edward VII:s bortgång.
"When she heard of Edward the VII:s death, Rosa gathered all the guests and servants in the hall and led them in procession down to the wine cellars. She unlocked the inner door, and the small group could just see the priceless bottles racked up along the dim, cool walls: Veuve Clicquot 1904, Château Pontet Canet, Château Haut Brion, Cachet du Château 1888, an 1820 Martell brandy, a Courvoisier from the year of the Battle of Waterloo.---- These bottles had been reserved for the late King. The group stood in solemn silence, allowing the memory of the hotel's most distinguished guest to fill the cellar, then Rosa locked the door and led the procession back out of the cellar, leaving instructions that at least in her lifetime the small inner door should never be opened again."
