Året var 1931


Jag hittade två böcker som båda gavs ut år 1931. Det är alltid lika spännande att botanisera i den äldre litteraturen för där hittar man ofta så många bortglömda skatter. "Plagued by the Nightingale" är Kay Boyles  debutroman och för den fick hon mycket positiv uppmärksamhet en gång. Kay Boyle hann med att skriva ett trettiotal romaner och novellsamlingar under sitt långa liv (1902-1992). Hon kallades ibland för en kvinnlig Hemingway.


James Truslow Adams myntade begreppet "The American Dream". I "The Epic of America" berättar han om det stora landets mäktiga historia och han gör det mycket väl. För att förstå nutiden måste man känna till det förflutna. (Det borde framför allt en del politiker lära sig att begripa).

His American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

Mrs C: För något år sedan läste jag hennes roman Year before last. Den tyckte jag mycket om.
