Efuru av Flora Nwapa

Flora Nwapa (1931-1993) kallas för den moderna afrikanska litteraturens moder. Hon var lärare - från Nigeria. När inbördeskriget bröt ut år 1967 tvingades Flora Nwapa lämna Lagos och det dröjde ett antal år innan hon kunde återvända till sitt hemland igen. Under åren 1970-71 var hon "Minister for Health & Social Welfare for the East Central State."

"Efuru" är hennes debutroman och hon skickade först manuskriptet till författarkollegan Chinua Achebe. Han blev så förtjust i berättelsen att han skickade den vidare i sin tur till Heinemans förlag- som publicerade (1966).

Efuru är en stark, vacker och klok kvinna som kämpar för att överleva i en svår värld. Hon växer upp moderlös och möter den ena utmaningen efter den andra. Två äktenskap misslyckas och Efuru förlorar ett litet barn också. Trots allt detta förblir hon självständig och modig. Berättelsen skildrar också livet i en liten by i Nigeria- i en tid då gammalt och nytt ställs mot vartannat. En stor roll i boken spelar också sjö/flodgudinnan - Uhamiri.

"The white slave dealers gave the people the cannons in exchange for slaves. The white slave dealers were the Portuguese, the Dutch, the English or the French. The people regarded them as white men, their nationality did not make any difference, they were all the same. The white slave dealers gave them the cannons, the guns and the hot drinks. The hot drinks did what the Indian hemp is doing in politics today. The only difference is tht the hot drinks were legal and the Indian hemp illegal, but both performed the same function."
