The Garden of Evening Mists av Tan Twan Eng

Japansk trädgård (lånat foto)

"A garden borrows from the earth, the sky, and everything around it, but you borrow it from time." (s. 153 The Garden of Evening Mists).

Det här blir tankar mestadels förmedlade i bilder för The Garden of Evening Mists är en bok som kommer just bilderna att flöda så mäktigt samtidigt som man får ta del av flera kulturer och bitar av två länders historia.

There is a goddess of Memory, Mnemosyne; but none of Forgetting. Yet there should be, as they are twin sisters, twin powers, and walk on either side of us, disputing for sovereignity over us and who we are, all the way until death.

(Richard Holmes, A Meander Through Memory and Forgetting- inledningsord till romanen).

I am the daughter of Earth and Water,
And the nursling of the Sky;
I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores;
I change, but I cannot die.
For after the rain when with never a stain
The pavilion of Heaven is bare,
And the winds and sunbeams with their convex gleams
Build up the blue dome of air,
I silently laugh at my own cenotaph,
And out of the caverns of rain,
Like a child from the womb, like a ghost from the tomb,
I arise and unbuild it again.

(Från The Cloud av Percy Bysshe Shelley)

Lao Tzu-

"Heaven's way is like the pulling of a bow, bringing down the high and rising up the low. It takes from what is excessive, and gives to what is lacking. The way of Man is the opposite"

"The palest ink will endure beyond the memories of men."( s. 155 The Garden of Evening Mists)

And what was time but merely a wind that never stopped? (s.188)

"There is no wind; the flag does not move; it is only the hearts and minds of men that are restless. --- Before me lies a voyage of a million miles, and memory is the moonlight I will borrow to illuminate my way. The lotus flowers are opening in the first rays of the sun. Tomorrow's rain lies on the horizon, but high up in the sky something pale and small is descending, growing in size as it falls. I watch the heron circle the pond, a leaf spiralling down to the water, setting off silent ripples across the garden." (slutraderna i boken).

Foto: Will Ellis (från Reading i England)

Landet: Malaysia

Författaren: Tan Twan Eng (f.1972 i Penang).

"On a mountain above the clouds once lived a man who had been the gardener of the Emperor of Japan. Not many people would have known of him before the war, but I did. He had left his home on the rim of the sunrise to come to the central highlands of Malaya. I was seventeen years old when my sister first told me about him. A decade would pass before I travelled up to the mountains to see him."

De första raderna ... nog dras man in i boken direkt......
