Ker-Xavier Roussel hörde till den så kallade nabistgruppen " den bukoliske nabin" kallades han ibland för och han lät sig inspireras av herdar, fauner, nymfer och satyrer bland annat. Så här beskrivs han i Arthur Ellridges bok "Gauguin and the nabis- prophets of modernism" : He walked along paths and lanes, through orchards, copses, woods, everywhere. He walked as others harvested, without ever lapsing into idleness. He assimilated all the different things that he saw; bundled together the entire countryside like a sheaf of wheat."

Roussel hyllade livet och det finns ett alldeles speciellt ljus i hans tavlor. " His paintings would come alive and sing".
